Shot Down
Work that has never
seen the light of day
Agda, NSW
Where do design concepts
go when they die?
The bottom drawer?
Are they repurposed for another client 3 months later? Or do they go in the back of the folio under the heading, 'They didn't actually go with this option but I still really like it so I keep it in my folio'.
Wherever they end up, we all have them. Rejected concepts.
Work that has never seen
the light of day.
Ideas that you slave over for days, months, weeks only to have it play second fiddle to the 'preferred route.' Ideas that have been shot down.
Join Toko and designers Mark Gowing (Mark Gowing Design), Paul Garbett (Naughtyfish), Ivana Martinovic (Native) as we drown our sorrows to a selection of the unseen, unheard, unrealised and the possibly under-appreciated.

About AU.thentic
In 2011 the world is scattered with people and products of Australian heritage. In turn, Australia is now home to some of the world's most interesting and inspiring creatives.
AU.thentic explores the way that Australia is engaged with the world creatively both here and abroad. Through the changes in technology, travel and lifestyle choices, Australia has become a global force in creativity across all disciplines. We not only export our product but also our talent, and we import the same – making the melting pot that is Australia a new creative force bedded in the roots of Australian traditions. AU.thentic's online presence includes a user-generated map where Australian creatives can add their location, picture and link, showing the groundswell of Australian creative globally and giving the exhibition a life outside the gallery.

To ensure the guides and displays can compete with busy (mainly retail) surroundings we created a clear and bold identity system based on directional vernacular.
Besides the logo we created a custom made typeface, guide templates, window stickers, posters and bags.

Sydney Design 2011
Identity
We just finished the Identity for Sydney Design 2011.
—
Sydney Design is an annual event produced by the Powerhouse Museum in association with more than 60 cultural institutions, organisations and individuals across Sydney. With over 100 events, the program includes inspiring exhibitions, workshops, master classes, talks, installations and tours – unpacking design, connecting people and creating meaningful dialogue around design issues.
In answer to this year's theme 'Is Old New Again', we developed a visual identity concept which celebrates paper as an icon through an icon.
The simplification and digitalisation of honest and physical paper for our digital world represents the immense changes we experience and will experience in the future. This little icon represents the connection to the 'old' world and helps us navigate through the 'new'.
Sydney Design 2011
We are living in a world where change is so rapid that our notions of 'normal' are constantly shifting. In all areas of design – such as product design, architecture, fashion and graphic design, practitioners everywhere are mining tradition and marrying cutting edge technology with an artisanal and human sensibility. You can see it in media, food, popular culture and the arts but nowhere is this more pronounced than in the world of design. Consumers want to connect with makers and growers and hear the voice of the average person. Don't be mistaken, this is not about nostalgia – it's a collision between design, tradition, innovation, heritage and experimentation. In lace, for example, practitioners are employing a radical reworking of traditional craft using cutting edge technology and materials – exploding preconceived ideas and stereotypes. Designers everywhere are reworking, recycling, and reconfiguring everything about the way we think, behave, create and consume design. At the core of this is a craving felt by designers and consumers for sincerity, honesty and fairness. Is the past offering a new starting point?

The Exhibition
Graphic Material is an exhibition of new and innovative works by leading local and international graphic designers who question and push the material boundaries of their discipline.
The lines between design disciplines, often conceptualised in terms of their material output, are becoming increasingly blurred.
Traversing contemporary design, art and technology, the exhibition is an exploration of graphic design which, freed from the constraints of ink on paper, challenges this assumption, dissolving traditional boundaries between the graphic, industrial and architectural.
Curated by Aaron Seymour, the exhibition features work by Toko, Collider,
Jürg Lehni, Mark Gowing, Bert Simons, Jeremy Wood, Sabrina Raaf,

Design network Infographiti
Barcelona is the host of a new design museum called: Design Hub Barcelona. Their aim is to become the "HUB" where (inter)national creativity and design will meet.
To mark the establishment of DHUB and the opening of the museum Toko was asked, among 35 design professionals around the world, to make a design contribution on the topic DesignHub, and illustrate ideas suggested by the DHUB name or discourse. Participants are; Toko, Ivan Chermayeff, Bureau Mirko Borsche, Ed Fella, Toormix, Vier5, Hort, Dieter Wiechmann, Büro Uebele, Astrid Seme, Werkplaats Typografie, Cobbenhagen Hendriksen, Karlssonwilker Inc., Milton Glaser and more...
Toko's contribution to the museum comprises of a logo and visual identity which is not a finished product, but a materialisation of the vision of the museum's current stage of infancy, a design hub to become.
A Hub obtains importance through developing connections.
In our contribution we stimulate this process for the museum by connecting as many designers / creatives to the museum and each other as we can. The data we collect during this staged networking process forms the museums virtual identity. An organic and dynamic identity which, guided by the incoming data, is in constant development, relating to the actual growth of the museum's design network.
This visual identity jumpstarts the process of network creation, helping the museum to become the Hub they aim for.
Edited by DHUB, with the support of Fundació Comunicació Gràfica, the project is on display at the Arts Santa Mònica centre, within the framework of the first Arts Libris. Fira del Llibre d’Art i Disseny a Barcelona.

A Lace revolution is here!
Concept, visual Identity and exhibition graphics
for Powerhouse Museum's ground-breaking exhibition 'Love Lace'.
—
From a
disused farm truck revived by its impressive metal lace body, a sculpture of a female uterus made from delicately knitted human hair, and a replica Ford motor engine created from thin crocheted steel. These are just some of the extraordinary works featured in the ground-breaking exhibition 'Love Lace' at the Powerhouse Museum.
The Museum's need to present a provocative challenge to conventional notions of lace in order to attract new audiences was the key motivator for us to develop a 'Revolutionary' visual identity concept for this extra-ordinary exhibition.
Preconceived opinions on Lace are challenged by a provocatively bold execution of marketing and advertising collateral.
'The Lace revolution' embodied in tag-lines like;
"Make Lace Not War", Not Just a Thread, and "Open Work For Everyone!"
comes to live in a dynamic visual identity representing revolutionary vernacular like protest signs, badges and poster walls.
Toko also developed the exhibition graphics complementing Durbach Block's exciting architectural design.

For the festival we developed a versatile and dynamic identity based on the juxtaposition of the arts and nature. We inherited the logo of the previous festival which we altered to match the new visual direction.
Tasmania's unique and pristine nature and the diversity of the festival take centre stage in the colourful and sometimes dramatic collateral, so is the festival logo, always dead centre (representing Tasmania as the centre of the art world for these ten days).
Kingspan & Australian Institute of Architects
Campaign
Envelope city
—
As a major sponsor of the Australian Institute of Architects Kingspan took the opportunity to introduce architects to the 'Building Envelope'. A building solution excelling in energy and cost efficiency with unparalled construction simplicity, fast becoming the conceptual focal point in the design and construction of contemporary and sustainable buildings.
We developed the introduction campaign which included; tone of voice, posters, advertising, banners,Tvc's, website and brochures. To enforce the term 'Building Envelope' we developed a very literal but effective concept, namely envelopes as structures.
The building envelope - Addressing energy efficiency.

I Love Type series (Vol. 2) I Love Avant Garde
Press
We just received our copy of the publication 'I love Avant Garde.
On display amongst others, is a selection of 'Avant Garde' work by Toko.
—
Being part of the publishing serie 'I Love Type' the publication focusses on visual communication using 1 particular typeface. This volume gives an overview of international contemporary graphic design utilizing the iconic typeface Avant garde. Besides its well curated and strict selection of internationally accaimed designers,it makes for an excellent read into the history of this characteristic and historic typeface.
About I Love Type Series Publication
Originally established as the masthead to envision the leading-edge editorial attempts of Avant Garde magazine, ITC Avant Garde Gothic was one of gifted communicator, Herb Lubalin's historic creative piece. Its custom-manipulation for individual letters had enabled the type to trademark the publication anywhere on the cover as a block, and radiated the art directors and graphic designers' imagination—who used them with glee.
Beautifully produced in hands with prolific Spanish creative duo, TwoPoints.Net, I Love Type is witness to the fashionable comeback of a selection of time-honored typefaces with focus on one type-family at a time. Capturing a myraid of inventive type treatments, ranging from layout arrangements, special printing and custom variants, the series is a review of how today's graphic designers are breathing new life into classic typesets and timeless aesthetics into modern context. I Love Avant Garde is the second volume of the type collection to hit the stores.

Baetulona Expo
Exhibition
Artwork contribution for the exhibition 'Expo Baetulona'
curated by ' The Brrothers team'.
—
A massive project (as in size) which took upon the ambition to immortalize the 100 most important moments of the city of Badalona, Spain. The result is a 1.5 meter high and 100 meter long time-line created by 100 national and international creatives.
Toko's topic was THE INAUGURATION OF RADIO CIUTAT DE BADALONA.
Along with Democracy in Badalona came the recovery of mass media.
On the 7th July 1981 Radio Ciutat de Badalona was inaugurated, Television de Baetulona launched taking advantage of the lack of local TV Station legislation, and Newspaper El Punt, founded in Girona in 1979, returned to the city of Badalona as the first daily newspaper.
Our contribution is a visualisation of the first insecure and fragmented radio waves hitting the exciting citizens of Badalona. Obviously we were not there in 1981 but can only imagine the people of Badalona scrambling to find the right frequency.
In 2011 the 'mural' will be touring various cities around the globe.

Kingspan approached Toko to come up with a creative and, for industry standards, progressive way of thinking to name and promote their exciting new colour ranges for insulated panels.
Pitched at the design savvy architects, Toko transformed this highly industrial product into four works of abstract art, each representing one of the four colour ranges.
Besides naming the products we developed various brand items like; brochures, canvasses, website, exhibition stand, coasters, t-shirts, animations and presentations.
Stage 2 of the roll-out included a set of 4 coloured notebooks each representing 1 of the 4 colour ranges which was presented as a package at the 2010 National Architecture Awards in Canberra. Other items developed are several multi-page ads for Architecture Australia and Architecture Review and swatch sample sleeves.

DispHosed
Vase
4 Clamps, 8 Screws and a hose
Approx. 150 x 150 cm
—
As part of Sydney Design Toko collaborated with Metalab on the inspiring event Designer Sushi.
Our contribution to the exhibition 'DispHosed' is inspired on the content of our given sushi box; a collection of rubber hoses. The result is a sustainable installation and object where reusability and poetry meets. A discarded water hose turned into makeshift vase. A little idea to help reduce waste and generate a smile. 4 clamps, 8 screws and a hose, simplicity.
The Exhibition
Start with a pre-packaged sushi box filled with an eclectic mix of everyday bits and pieces. Add a diverse range of designers from a variety of disciplines. Blend them together to create fresh and original artwork flavoured with the spice of design.
This exhibition – a collaboration between Metalab, Cloth and Germany’s mmmh! Designer-Sushi – will display the boxes alongside the new outcomes throughout August. These beautiful and balanced works create order out of chaos while highlighting how everyday objects can act as inpiration to all types of designers.
When
11am-6pm Wednesday-Friday; 11am-5pm Saturday, 5-28 August

Toko's contribution "Save the Vinyl" is a tribute to a vanishing music carrier and
a historic versatile artistic canvas for the graphic designer.

'After the most convincing winter in ages, spring has finally come. Looking outside at a sunny and crisp, blue sky we can’t help but feel our world has been fundamentally altered. Recession teared some old structures apart, reinforcing others, and generally accelerated the change that had been in the air for years. Change is hardly ever pleasant. But always exciting'
'The world is going through changes, so is Code... New Order!'
Graphic Design Festival
Exhibition
We are very pleased to be invited to be part of this years Graphic Design Festival in Breda.
—
Every year the world's only graphic design museum, located in Breda, The Netherlands, curates a leading, international Graphic Design Festival.
For this years edition of the museum's festival Toko was asked, among 48 other internationally renowned designers, to design a poster for the festivals poster project. With decoding as it's main theme, the 49 unique posters form a tour, leading visitors to the various festival venues around the city of Breda.
Toko's poster submission is an ode to genetic code which appeared on Earth with the first cells. Codes of cultural evolution arrived almost 4 billion years later. (Marcello Barbieri)
Our understanding of the mathematical principles behind our physical world is increasing and it provides us with 'tools' to create a new and exciting digital world. Most 'codes' are virtual and a state of mind but some are 'present' and provide systems to generate new forms of architecture and e.g. cures for diseases. The human 'interference' in the natural world is what we visualized through our design by using a cross section of Cedar wood and altering it into a human creation.

Toko was approached by the talented fashion designer Alistair Trung to design his website, long awaited for by his many clients both in Australia and overseas.
The website is a tribute to Trung's elegant and tactile fashion. Besides the fashion the websites allows for a personal encounter and insight in Alistairs world, showing his inspiration and aspirations as a designer.
