Shot Down
Work that has never
seen the light of day
Agda, NSW
Where do design concepts
go when they die?
The bottom drawer?
Are they repurposed for another client 3 months later? Or do they go in the back of the folio under the heading, 'They didn't actually go with this option but I still really like it so I keep it in my folio'.
Wherever they end up, we all have them. Rejected concepts.
Work that has never seen
the light of day.
Ideas that you slave over for days, months, weeks only to have it play second fiddle to the 'preferred route.' Ideas that have been shot down.
Join Toko and designers Mark Gowing (Mark Gowing Design), Paul Garbett (Naughtyfish), Ivana Martinovic (Native) as we drown our sorrows to a selection of the unseen, unheard, unrealised and the possibly under-appreciated.

About AU.thentic
In 2011 the world is scattered with people and products of Australian heritage. In turn, Australia is now home to some of the world's most interesting and inspiring creatives.
AU.thentic explores the way that Australia is engaged with the world creatively both here and abroad. Through the changes in technology, travel and lifestyle choices, Australia has become a global force in creativity across all disciplines. We not only export our product but also our talent, and we import the same – making the melting pot that is Australia a new creative force bedded in the roots of Australian traditions. AU.thentic's online presence includes a user-generated map where Australian creatives can add their location, picture and link, showing the groundswell of Australian creative globally and giving the exhibition a life outside the gallery.

Ten Days on the Island 2013
Branding
We just returned from a short trip to Tasmania to enjoy the result of 1 year worth of work for the Ten Days on the Island Festival. Ten Days on the Island, Tasmania's international arts festival, (Ten Days) is Australia's only, state-wide, international arts festival and Tasmania's premier cultural event. Since its inception in 2001, the festival has presented the work of an outstanding range of international, national and Tasmanian artists whose work celebrates global island culture. The festival has been presented to audiences in every corner of Tasmania, impacting the lives of almost one million people over the six festivals held to date.

Over the past year Toko has been developing and implementing the 2013 campaign for the Ten Days on the Island arts festival. With the festival coming closer, kicking of on 15 march, the first pieces of printed collateral are now being printed and distributed.
This years campaign is an evolution of the 2011 campaign where the black dot took centre stage (http://toko.nu/home.html#popup-tendays). The 10 coloured dots represent and identify the 10 Festival towns, each hosting their own international arts festival. Hot from the press:
'Lacoste + Stevenson = Book'
—
This book is a compilation of projects designed by award-winning architects Lacoste + Stevenson over the course of two decades of practice. These projects include built and unbuilt work of varying programmes, complexities and budgets, and range from furniture design to urban master planning, from art installations to large buildings.
With design by renowned creative studio Toko, the emphasis of the book is on process rather than execution or detail, the intention being to highlight the concepts that have guided the design. These concepts have been classified in families ('contrast', 'camouflage', 'formula', 'combination', 'surprise', 'strategy', 'atmosphere'), bringing to light a constant approach to design that is independent of size or type. The book is like the 'Happy Families' card game and the reader is intended to enjoy it in the spirit of a game, comparing illustrations of the different members of the family.

Sydney Design 2011
Identity
We just finished the Identity for Sydney Design 2011.
—
Sydney Design is an annual event produced by the Powerhouse Museum in association with more than 60 cultural institutions, organisations and individuals across Sydney. With over 100 events, the program includes inspiring exhibitions, workshops, master classes, talks, installations and tours – unpacking design, connecting people and creating meaningful dialogue around design issues.
In answer to this year's theme 'Is Old New Again', we developed a visual identity concept which celebrates paper as an icon through an icon.
The simplification and digitalisation of honest and physical paper for our digital world represents the immense changes we experience and will experience in the future. This little icon represents the connection to the 'old' world and helps us navigate through the 'new'.
Sydney Design 2011
We are living in a world where change is so rapid that our notions of 'normal' are constantly shifting. In all areas of design – such as product design, architecture, fashion and graphic design, practitioners everywhere are mining tradition and marrying cutting edge technology with an artisanal and human sensibility. You can see it in media, food, popular culture and the arts but nowhere is this more pronounced than in the world of design. Consumers want to connect with makers and growers and hear the voice of the average person. Don't be mistaken, this is not about nostalgia – it's a collision between design, tradition, innovation, heritage and experimentation. In lace, for example, practitioners are employing a radical reworking of traditional craft using cutting edge technology and materials – exploding preconceived ideas and stereotypes. Designers everywhere are reworking, recycling, and reconfiguring everything about the way we think, behave, create and consume design. At the core of this is a craving felt by designers and consumers for sincerity, honesty and fairness. Is the past offering a new starting point?

Toko was approached by LWR to develop the name and brand identity for their new online school wear business.

Love Lace, Powerhouse Museum
Exhibition
A Lace revolution is here!
Concept, visual Identity and exhibition graphics
for Powerhouse Museum's ground-breaking exhibition 'Love Lace'.
—
From a
disused farm truck revived by its impressive metal lace body, a sculpture of a female uterus made from delicately knitted human hair, and a replica Ford motor engine created from thin crocheted steel. These are just some of the extraordinary works featured in the ground-breaking exhibition 'Love Lace' at the Powerhouse Museum.
The Museum's need to present a provocative challenge to conventional notions of lace in order to attract new audiences was the key motivator for us to develop a 'Revolutionary' visual identity concept for this extra-ordinary exhibition.
Preconceived opinions on Lace are challenged by a provocatively bold execution of marketing and advertising collateral.
'The Lace revolution' embodied in tag-lines like;
"Make Lace Not War", Not Just a Thread, and "Open Work For Everyone!"
comes to live in a dynamic visual identity representing revolutionary vernacular like protest signs, badges and poster walls.
Toko also developed the exhibition graphics complementing Durbach Block's exciting architectural design.
